The discipleship that the Church discovers in prayer she expresses in deep interest for Christ's brethren...and for their many different needs. Her concern, manifested in various ways, embraces - among others - the areas of housing, education, unemployment, the administration of justice, the special needs of the aged and the handicapped. In prayer, the Church is confirmed in her solidarity with the weak who are oppressed, the vulnerable who are manipulated, the children who are exploited, and everyone who is in any way discriminated against.
- Pope St. John Paul II

Supporting Our Mission Through Prayer

PRAYER FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES: Oh Lord, our God, source of all love, we come in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ to ask your blessing on Catholic Charities. Open wide our hearts to those who urgently need a helping hand and tender care. Send Your Holy Spirit to guide and direct our efforts to respond to those in need, work to improve social conditions for all your people, and call others to do the same. Help us become fully catholic through sharing our gifts with each other and with all who are hindered by poverty or isolation. May we do your work with charity, your gift of healing love, which reaches beyond daily needs to touch our hearts. We praise you and bless You Lord, for your many gifts to us, and for the blessings we receive. May we share them generously with our brothers and sisters. Hear our prayer in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES: Lord Jesus, open our eyes that we may see you in all our sisters and brothers. Open our minds that we may understand their hopes and dreams, their sorrows and pain, their longing for you. Open our hearts to give generously of ourselves. Grant us wisdom to respond effectively to the needs of your people with grace and compassion. Give us the courage to speak your words of life, peace, love, mercy and human solidarity. Bless the people whom we serve, and strengthen the staff and volunteers who reach out to them every day in your spirit of Charity. Amen.

PRAYER FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE: Hear our prayer today for all women and men, boys and girls who are homeless this day. For those sleeping under bridges, on park benches, in doorways or bus stations. For those who can only find shelter for the night but must wander in the daytime. For families broken because they could not afford to pay the rent. For those who have no relatives or friends who can take them in. For those who have no place to keep possessions that remind them who they are. For those who are afraid and hopeless. For those who have been betrayed by our social safety net. For all these people, we pray that you will provide shelter, security and hope. We pray for those of us with warm houses and comfortable beds that we not be lulled into complacency and forgetfulness. Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we meet so that we may be empowered through word and deed, and through the political means we have, to bring justice and peace to those who are homeless. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THOSE EXPERIENCEING DEPRESSION: Tender God, Your gentle and kind-hearted love waits for us in the darkness and shields us from the light when it feels too overwhelming. We remember today all those who live in the depths of depression. Continue to cherish us all when we find it so difficult to cherish ourselves. Enable us to discover companions of compassion who will abide with us, as you abide in all things and in all places where the heart and mind aches for peace and a place of rest from the storm. We ask this in the name of our brother and friend, Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM ADDICTION: God of mercy, we bless you in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who ministered to all who come to Him. Give your strength to (name of the one I am praying for), who is bound by the chains of addiction. Enfold him/her in your love and restore him/her to freedom through your grace. Lord, look with compassion on all those who have lost their health and have broken relationships because of their attachment to the object of their addiction. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy, and strengthen them in the work of recovery. To those who care for them, grant patient understanding and a love that perseveres.

PRAYER FOR MENTAL HEALING: Jesus, I know that when you walked on the earth, you trod upon hard places, you felt the strain of this world and the pressures of mental torment. So I ask that you would come besides me now, lead me through this time where my mind cannot cope. Help me to find peace and calming inner thoughts. You hold me safe Lord, I trust in you. Amen.

PRAYER FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING: Gracious Lord, You know me better than I know myself and I need your healing touch on my life today. You know all about the emotional pain that I have been going through these last few days - and Lord, I need You Lord to come into my heart and to bind up the brokenness within me. I feel that I have been battered and bruised emotionally and am almost gasping for breath, due to the pain that has been stabbing my heart. Lord, I come to you to heal my emotions - heal my wounded heart, I pray, - heal the anguish that is deep inside. Lord, flood every corner of my being with your soothing balm and your healing love - and root out I pray, all the negative emotions that are bubbling inside me. Release into the aching void within - Your love and your peace, your hope and your gracious presence and gently carry me as a kindly Shepherd would carry a frightened, little wounded lamb. Lord I am trusting in you, because I know that you alone can be trusted, Amen.

PRAYER FOR EMPLOYMENT: Creator God, thank you for providing us with the gift to share our talents. Provide our community, our nation, our world the fortitude to provide work for all which is decent and fair. Make us faithful stewards of your creation to enhance the human dignity of our global family. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen

PRAYER OF SOLIDARITY IN HUMAN SUFFURING: Almighty and ever-living God, empower your one human family to join hands on our journey of faith. Send us your spirit of hope, so that we may work to alleviate human suffering and foster charity and justice in our world. Amen.

PRAYER FOR SUPPORT OF THE IMMIGRANT: Come, O Holy Spirit! Come, open us to the wonder, beauty, and dignity of the diversity found in each culture, in each face, and in each experience we have of the other among us. Come, fill us with generosity as we are challenged to let go and allow others to share with us the goods and beauty of earth. Come, heal the divisions that keep us from seeing the face of Christ in all men, women, and children. Come, free us to stand with and for those who must leave their own lands in order to find work, security, and welcome in a new land, one that has enough to share. Come, bring us understanding, inspiration, wisdom, and the courage needed to embrace change and stay on the journey. Come, O Holy Spirit, show us the way. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR IMMIGRANT JUSTICE: Blessed are You, Lord God, King of all creation. Through Your goodness, we live in this land that you have so richly blessed. Help us always to recognize our blessings come from you and remind us to share them with others, especially those who come to us today from other lands. Help us to be generous, just, and welcoming as you have been and are generous to us. Amen.

PRAYER FOR REFUGEES: Dear Lord, You know what it means to be a refugee. You also lost all and perhaps remembered how you came to be hungry and naked, thirsty and cold, prisoners in a camp or prisoners in our own minds. They even took your cloak and you had nothing left, except some people who came by to quench your thirst, to give you a blanket and to help carry your burden. Lord Jesus, for God's sake, let us be those people who bring comfort, food and water, and an encouraging word. And may we then hear the words softly spoken: "insofar as you did it unto these people who are the least of my brothers, you did it unto me. Go in peace!" - Brother Andrew L. de Carpentier

PRAYER TO END HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Loving Father, We seek your divine protection for all who are exploited and enslaved. For those forced into labor, trafficked into sexual slavery, and denied freedom. We beseech you to release them from their chains. Grant them protection, safety, and empowerment. Restore their dignity and provide them a new beginning. Show us how we might end exploitation by addressing its causes. Help us reach out in support of victims and survivors of human trafficking. Make us instruments of your spirit for their liberation. For this we pray through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

PRAYER FOR THE GIFT OF LIFE: O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. - Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae (1995)
